Klara Donath studied art and painting at university in Hungary, before she was expelled for her political views. After escaping Hungary in 1956 and immigrating to Australia, Klara worked in a variety of jobs to support her family. In Australia Klara has continued to create work in her chosen medium of textile art. A two-time winner of the Archibald Prize, Judy Cassab was a portraitist of immense insight and imagination, seemingly able to capture not only a sitter’s likeness but the spirit of their times. As well as painting social luminaries, royals, fellow artists, family and friends, she was also a prolific draughtswoman and an acclaimed landscape artist. Born Judit Kaszab in Vienna in 1920 to Jewish Hungarian parents, Cassab started painting at the age of 12. More on her and her work HERE

LÁSZLÓ BARANYAI was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1950. He started work as Camera Assistant for the Hungarian Film Company MAFILM in 1970. In 1978 he was accepted into the internationally renowned ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC & CINEMATIC ART, FILM & TELEVISION, Budapest. After graduation in 1982 he returned to MAFILM where he shot feature dramas, feature documentaries and many short subject dramas and documentaries. These projects garnered him numerous awards and established his reputation for excellence in Cinematography. In 1988 he relocated to Australia. Now based in Melbourne, Laszlo has forged a body of work including TV series, mini-series, documentaries, short dramas and multi-award winning feature films. In 1996 The Hungarian Government awarded him the “TRIBUTE TO EXCELLENCE” - a prize especially
established for Hungarian filmmakers living abroad and awarded for their outstanding contribution to world cinema. He is an accredited member of the Australian Cinematographers Society as well as the

Michael Meszaros, Sculptor & Medal Artist (1945-) Michael Meszaros was born into an artistic tradition, but he has developed a style and reputation uniquely his own. Son of the sculptor and medalist Andor Mészáros, Michael grew up in a small flat where the living room was also his father's studio. Michael said, 'I watched his artistic processes and struggles, his techniques, triumphs and difficulties.' By the age of 12 he was designing and drawing and at 13 received his first professional commission, a portrait medal of collector and family friend John Gartner. He collaborated with his father on works such as the D.P. Palmer memorial plaquette in 1959.More on him and his work HERE

Andrew Mezei (b. 1963), artist, was born to Hungarian refugee parents in Melbourne and grew up in their leather-goods workshop, observing their adherence to a tradition of fine European craftsmanship. He obtained a bachelor of fine art from RMIT in 1983, and later studied old master techniques under Richard Clements. His painting is informed by science and emotionally charged by a view of the world as teetering on the edge of ecological destruction. Following Dutch masters' techniques from the Baroque period, Mezei incorporates fine and rare pigments, resins and oils into his painting, and grinds most of his own colours. He has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize twice, with his portraits of Professor Penny Sackett (2011), now in the National Portrait Gallery, and Professor Kate Leslie (2014). He was a finalist in the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize and highly commended in the John Leslie Art Prize in 2006, winning in 2008. Mezei held his first exhibition at the Catherine Asquith Gallery in 2010 and three years later the Gippsland Art Gallery held a solo show of his post-apocalyptic landscapes titled The Darkest Prospect. Alex Kolozsy b. 1938 left his native Transylvania for Hungary as a small child. While a student at the Kepzomuveszeti Academy of Art in Gyor he became swept up in the Hungarian Revolution, and had to flee the country for Holland, where he studied for two years at the Rembrandt Academy of Art. He came to Australia at the end of 1958, taking out citizenship in 1964. His first solo exhibitions were held in 1970, a year in which he contributed work to the Captain Cook Bicentenary celebrations and was awarded a medal from the Bicentenary Committee. Since then he has worked steadily on public and private commissions, including the enormous Christ Victorious for St Brigid's Cathedral, Dubbo (3.65 m high) and the Pioneer Woman in the Jessie Street Gardens, Circular Quay (3m high). Between 2002 and 2004 citizens of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads staged a strenuous fund raising effort to realise a long-held dream of Kolozsy's, a massive statue of The Wild One, Johnny O'Keefe, that now towers over the Twin Towns. Kolozsy has exhibited regularly in Sydney and gained a number of local and international awards for sculpture, including the Distinguished Leadership Award for Exceptional Achievement in Sculpture, USA (1986). He has taught in a number of private studios and in 1990-1 was artist in residence at the University of Western Sydney, Richmond. He has a cultural doctorate in visual arts/sculpture from the World University Roundtable in Benson, Arizona, and has been listed in the International Who's Who of Intellectuals, Men of Achievement and 5000 Personalities of the World. He is a founding member and former President of the Hungarian Art Society of New South Wales. His works are held in the collections of Buckingham Palace, the USA Presidential Library, the Hungarian National Gallery, the Australian Museum and the Stockman's Hall of Fame. Jozsef Balogh (Hungarian/Australian 1922-1990) An internationally famous Hungarian artist whose works hang in 30 major collections across four continents Jozsef was born at Szeged in Hungary in 1922 and was conscripted into the Hungarian air force when World War II broke out After the war he was captured by the occupying Soviet forces and deported to a slave labour camp at Groznyy, where he lived under appalling conditions until his release in 1950 Jozsef had always had a talent for art, so when he returned to Hungary he enrolled at the Desi Hubert School of Fine Art in Budapest where he spent four years learning his craft But in 1956 – fed up with Communist rule – he actively participated in the Hungarian Uprising, until he was eventually forced to flee to the Netherlands alongside 150,000 others to escape the Soviet troops sent into to quell the situation Shortly after arriving in the Netherlands, Jozsef was approached to paint a portrait of Queen Juliana – a great honour that eventually launched him on a career painting the great and famous in Europe, Asia and Australia. Meeting his first wife Maria in 1959 The couple relocated to the French Riviera and Spain before eventually deciding to try Australia, arriving in Sydney with their new son in 1962.
